What Is a Ghillie? The Meaning Behind Our Name

The Guide.
The Name.
The Tradition.

The word ghillie has been part of the Scottish countryside for centuries. This is what it means, where it comes from and why it gave our brand its name.

By Hamish Godman  ·  Ghillie Field Notes

When we named the brand Ghillie, we weren't reaching for a romantic word with a nice sound. We were choosing a name that carried real meaning — one rooted in the Scottish countryside, in the relationship between people and the land, and in the knowledge that comes from spending a life working outdoors.

Understanding what a ghillie is helps explain what we are trying to make.

Ghillie
/ˈɡɪli/ · noun
A person employed as an attendant and guide on hunting or fishing expeditions, particularly in the Scottish Highlands. A ghillie reads the conditions, knows the land, chooses the beat and helps make the day work.
From Scottish Gaelic gille — a lad, a servant, a manservant; related to Old Irish gilla. First recorded in English in the early 17th century.

The Role of the Ghillie

A ghillie is not a gamekeeper, though the two often work together. Where the gamekeeper manages the land and the wildlife on it, the ghillie's role is more immediate and personal — to guide the person fishing or shooting through a day's sport on that land.

A good ghillie knows which pool on the river holds fish at which time of season. They know which beat to try on a still day versus a windy one. They read the light, the wind, the temperature and the behaviour of the quarry, and they use that knowledge to make every day count.

River Ghillie

Works alongside anglers on salmon and sea trout rivers — choosing beats, reading lies and netting fish at the critical moment.

Stalking Ghillie

Guides stag or hind stalking on the hill — selecting the approach, reading the wind and judging when the shot is safe and right.

Grouse Ghillie

Manages the drive, reads the birds and ensures the day runs smoothly on the moor from first light to last.

The Knowledge

What all ghillies share is accumulated knowledge — of a specific place, over many seasons, that can't be learned from a manual.

"The ghillie knows things no map can tell you. That knowledge is passed down through seasons, not books."

Why the Name Matters to Us

We named the brand Ghillie because we wanted to make clothing for the people who actually go outside — not for the people who buy outdoor clothing to look the part. The ghillie tradition is about earned knowledge and honest work. That's the standard we hold our garments to.

A Ghillie shirt, gilet or fleece should work the way a ghillie works — reliably, without fuss, across every condition the Scottish countryside can throw at it. Nothing more. Nothing less.
